In 1967, six heroin addicts came together at a detoxification program in a New York hospital. They moved into a brownstone in Manhattan and lived as a community; encouraging one another to stay sober. Phoenix House Academy – Outpatient Center, a program of Phoenix Houses of Los Angeles, Inc., is certified by the California Department of Health Care Services, Certification No.190115EN, for Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment. In terms of flexibility, outpatient programs are designed to work in tandem with patient schedules and daily responsibilities.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
Most recently, in a partnership with the Gavin Foundation, Phoenix House opened a new detox and transitional unit in Quincy, MA to help address the growing problem with addiction and particularly opioid addiction. Oftentimes, patients in day programs benefit greatly from being connected to other community resources, as well. Expanding their network of local resources is a good way to stay in line with personal goals, while simultaneously benefiting their loved ones. We use evidence-based interventions for adolescent drug misuse that seek to strengthen family relationships by improving communication and improving family members’ ability to support abstinence from drugs.
Phoenix House residential staff utilize rational emotive behavior therapy, during group and one on one individual sessions, to challenge self-defeating behaviors that are prevalent in substance abusing individuals. Rational emotive behavior therapy provides a framework to examine self-talk and examines the consequences of rational or irrational thinking. By helping clients recognize that their feelings are a direct result of their thinking, clients can take responsibility for the way they feel, therefore, the way they act.
Current Stand-Alone Organizations
Phoenix House was also established in the UK as an entirely separate organisation, though has its origins in the USA-based Phoenix House described above. Phoenix House (UK) runs a number of residential rehabilitation units, structured day programs and is the largest not for profit provider of prison based substance misuse programmes in the UK. In November 2006, Phoenix House (UK) rebranded to trade under the name 'Phoenix Futures.
